That same year, NBTel was the first company to deploy IPTV over ADSL in Canada, using the Alcatel 7350 DSLAM and middelware created by iMagicTV. The service was marketed as VibeVision before being developed in early 2000 as Nova Scotia, shortly after NBTel's merger with Aliant. iMagic TV was later sold to Alcatel.
In 2002, SaskTel was the second company to deploy IPTV in Canada, using Lucent Stinger's ADSL platform. In 2006, it will become the first North American company to offer high definition television channels on the IPTV service.
In April 2002, in France, the president of the TF1 group Patrick Le Lay signs after several months of negotiation with the FAI Free a letter of intent. This letter concerns the setting up of an experiment in Paris and the feasibility study of a television service by ADSL and a video on demand service. On September 18, 2002, Free launched the first ADSL TV in France offering channels divided into two families: free access and paid access. The optional channels are sold either by bouquet, or individually without a commitment period.
In 2003, Total Access Network Inc launched its IPTV service, including a hundred free IPTV stations around the world. This service will be used in 100 countries and in 26 languages.
In 2005, Bredbandsbolaget became the first broadcaster to launch an IPTV service in Sweden. However since 2009, it is no longer the country's leading supplier, joined by TeliaSonera.
In 2006, AT&T launched its U-Verse IPTV service in the United States, including a national headend and regional service offices for video. This service then delivers more than 300 channels in eleven cities, and even more from 2007. In March 2009, AT&T announces that U-Verse extends to more than one hundred additional high definition channels. In addition to using Internet Protocol, AT&T has built a private IP network exclusively for video streaming.
In 2007, TPG became the first ISP to launch IPTV in Australia. In addition to its ADSL2+ offer, this service is free and now offers 45 free access channels at local level and a certain number of international channels.
In 2010, CenturyLink, after the acquisition of Embarq (2009) and Owest (2010), established itself in five American markets with its IPTV Prism service.
In September 1999, Kingston Communications, an English regional operator, launched the KIT (Kingston Interactive Television) offer including an IPTV service and Vod on ADSL.
As long as the providers pay for the right to broadcast the channels offered, whether they are in their paid or free package, IPTV is legal. It is also legal when you watch a channel that owns the rights to broadcast its programs.
